Bill Marr: Act Three

I look for new ways to use photography and visual storytelling, especially with complex topics that need clear explanation. Since retiring, I have consulted with a number of clients, but most of my time has been spent on a personal project on rising sea levels. My 40-year career reflects a dedication to photography and its presentation in newspapers, books, and magazines.

I was creative director of National Geographic magazine for 10 years, charged with the design and art in National Geographic Society’s flagship publication. I led the push into the digital world with National Geographic’s award-winning iPad app. National Geographic was recognized with 23 National Magazine Awards during the 10 years I was there—these awards considered the Academy Awards of the magazine industry—including four General Excellence top awards, four Best Tablet Edition Ellies, three Photography Ellies, and Magazine of the Year in 2012. The magazine and individual projects have been recognized numerous times by the Society of Illustrators, Society of News Design, Malofiej, the Society of Publication Designers, and Pictures of the Year International.
