Wildwood, New Jersey

The Wildwoods in Cape May County, New Jersey—North Wildwood, West Wildwood, Wildwood Crest and Wildwood—cover Five Mile Beach, a barrier island. Significant flooding will begin as sea level rises past 3 feet.

During the summer, population can swell to 250,000 from a resident population of about 13,000, pulling vacationers from Philadelphia, and other parts of New Jersey. The Wildwood Shore Historic District has more than 200 motels, mostly privately owned, built during the 1950s and 1960s Doo Wop period. One of the first rock-and-roll hits, "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley and His Comets, was first performed in Wildwood in 1954 giving rise to the city's claim as the "birthplace of rock and roll."
